Pacha Takes To New York Streets

New York superclub Pacha are lending their support to the anti-cabaret law Dance Parade this weekend, hosting a float for the first time on the Manhattan procession.

“We’re looking forward to participating in it,” Pacha chief Eddie Dean told Skrufff this week.

“This year Pacha is taking it to the next level by having the Martinez Brothers performing on our 80 feet float. We expect to have over 500 friends of Pacha dancing along the custom designed float,” he confimed.

Revellers wishing to attend the event are required to register in advance (on website danceparade.org) which begins at 1pm on Saturday May 17 between 27th and 28th Streets between Broadway and Sixth Avenue. The procession then winds its way down Broadway, cutting East on 8th Street and finishing at Tompkins Square Park, where various sound systems will be playing throughout Saturday afternoon.

Dance Parade organisers this week cited Berlin Love Parade founder Dr Motte as one of their key inspirations and urged New Yorkers to ‘free your mind and face your fears’.

“In the 19th century, ballroom dancing was deemed devil’s work. In the 1920’s, New York City enacted the Cabaret Law to stem interracial dancing from Harlem Jazz Clubs. The 1930’s had Nazi Germany quashing Swing Dancing because it was considered anarchistic. And in 2006, a New York State Supreme Court ruled that, unlike music, theater and painting, dance is not a constitutionally protected form of expression,” said the organisers.

“In contrast, Dance Parade will highlight the diversity found in its many forms and showcase dance’s immense cultural and communicative importance. To invoke joy and brotherhood,” they added.
