Psy-trance

Eskimo - "All I Will Say Is Jamie Oliver... Wop That In There!

You’ve achieved more than most of your peers within the psychedelic scene having toured the world, written best-selling albums and achieving a huge dedicated following of fans worldwide. From your career so far, what would you say your personal highlight has been?

Wow, reading that sentence probably, heheh...I guess its been the last 6 months where I have been in the lucky position to push the boundries of the scene I play in and push a lot of my own influences into my new music. And to see people open up to different things every time I play. It's great!

You used to perform undr the name Junya (your real name) before using the name Eskimo. Where did the nickname Eskimo originate from, and do you have any other aliases that people may not realise you are behind?

Well, actually, my real name is John, same as my father, so everyone years ago used to call me JR (see the connection "JUNYA")..I wanted to use that name to play but not as JR. So Junya sounds cool. The name Eskimo came around because I always like names that had nothing to do with what I was playing or performing, a classic name I would not use is something like "Interstellar active motion" or something like that, its just not me, and Eskimo just sounded like a good name that did not sound like any others I had heard. I have had a few side projects of the last lets say 6 years, most of have finished now, names like, HORIZON, DYNAMO, JUMANJI...These days i have one project called RENAGADE, this is more along the lines of THE PRODIGY, CHEMICAL BROTHERS and things like that, we trying to launch it with some bigger lablels, Lets wait and see. And finally the next thing will be MEGA BAND (the name says exactly what it will be, hehehe)...Its myself and " VOID " (Oren Emanuel & Tamir Regev) 2 amazing talented producers that i have the pleasure to work with. The concept, is balls out Ego thorough the roof, just basically everything the people try not to be, and the only reason we can think why to do it, is because we are not supposed to. The first Track we made was " MTV " or on in the dance floors known as HELLO MOTO...The next coming is " ROCKSTAR "..So you get the idea around that. Its really all just a but of fun, and not taken too seriously.

2006 and 2007 have been the years that many people have said that psy-trance went progressive. Your recent ‘Balloonatic Pt 2’ album was anything but, taking listeners on a rave journey through some of the toughest sounds in psy. What’s your current take on the psychedelic scene at the moment and, more importantly, do you really care what people say?

I think I would be a DICK if i did not care what people say, but i like to think that what they say (if its not all sunshine and rainbows) will not distract me too much from my goals and direction that I want to take my music. I am happy to see the scene split up into different areas, its that entirely that i am promoting with Eskimo, " INDIVIDUALITY " ...Its great some times for everyone to have the same kind of sound, but its for that reason that lets say something like hard house hit bad times a few years back. Too many producers in one direction. Good for a while, but not long lasting. I hope that people who are open minded enough to say 'they' listen to a different style now, can still be open minded enough to not slag other peoples style off. Not saying they have to love it, but just let it be..

Psy-trance is of course massive in Israel. What’s your take on the scene there at present and how does it compare to the UK scene?

Its a very misunderstood thing about  the Israeli scene , most people believe that because Israel has the most artists, that the scene there most likely massive, because in-fact its almost no bigger than the UK scene. I love Israel, its an amazing place and the trance listening people there are very strong and have A LOT of love for the scene, but as far as number go (people in the events/parties) its about the same as the UK, in some cases smaller. But that does not take away from the power that the Israeli people hold in the parties, its really still a great experience to go there and I recommend it everyone...

Your music is defined by cheeky samples, crazy riffs and stuffed with more energy than the Red Bell central production factory! Where do you take your musical inspiration from?

All over really, kind of like the cd case that everyone has with bits and pieces un-labeled but well loved. Anything that moves me makes me want to recycle it and let my listeners or other people in general enjoy or feel what i felt when I heard it. I don't like to think for it as stealing, because I would never take credit from someone else's work (which i have gotten in trouble for before), i like to see it as adding extra culture. We can never have enough culture input into any dance scene..

You made waves in the hard dance scene recently with your extremely cool reworking of The Stimulant DJs hard dance anthem ‘Are You Serious’ which appeared on Balloonatic Pt 2. The rumour is that you’ve made a follow-up… can you tell us anything more about this?

Yeah, Its a kind of "mega jam" for lack of a better word. Its basically about 6 tracks from the label Tidy Trax all mashed up into about 6 minutes. Like I said before its great that I can push these influences onto listeners without trying to preach the dance floor. Its called RE-CYCLED (taking in mind the Tidy Trax logo) and may or may not come out of an up coming release of theirs..Fingers crossed.....for them..(just kidding tidy)..

The third part of Balloonatic is shortly due for release. What can the listener expect to hear from this album?

Absolutely no connection to the 1st or second part, The whole concept of the part 1, 2 3 thing was to show how this dance scene has evolved in me over the last years. Its been hard on myself and listeners for keep up with the updates of the parts, but thats the fun of the box of chocolates. I don't think I have to finish that corny line...

You’ve sampled Streetfighter, Motorola commercials, classic hard dance anthems and even the police on the extremely humorous rave rocker ‘Party Pooper’. Is there anything you’d absolutely love to sample but haven’t been able to get the parts or the idea right as of yet?

Oh man, you have no idea the stuff i have been trying to work with. It getting a bit strange sometimes so I have to hold back on some tracks. but I would love to tell you the exactly what the newest track is like but i don't want to spoil the impact from the dance floor..All I will say is....Jamie Oliver...Wop that in there..

You’re due to play over in the UK for Party Proactive. After playing for the party a couple of times in the past, what are your thoughts on the party vibes there?

Great, mostly because its totally different, i love to play in places unfamiliar as well as dance floors that i play all the time. I love the club, Especially the low ceiling, it reminds me of the parties I used to go to when i first started going out. When its rocking, its really going off there.

Finally, you’re given one million pounds and the choice of any venue in the world to put on a party. Where would you choose, and who would be on the line-up? (alive or dead!)
