Electro

One of electro's biggest assets, Richard Dinsdale, talks to Trackitdown

Although only a sprightly 24 years old, this new kid on the house block's been living, breathing and bleeding dance music for the best part of a decade. His mouth-watering mix of tech-tinged electro and bass-heavy house is a regular fixture at leading London nightspot The Cross, his solid, groove-led productions snapped up by UK labels Renaissance, Kinky Vinyl, Big Love and Toolroom. He also counts some of the scene's most successful movers'n'shakers - Erick Morillo, Mark Knight, Seamus Haji, Trophy Twins, Plump DJs - among his famous fans.

TID: Your sound is very distinctive, was that something you had always set out to achieve or did is evolve naturally?

Richard: It kind of evolved in its own way really, for about 4 years I just stuck myself in the studio and tweaked and played around with sounds for ages until I came up with what I have now. What i guess I like to do sometimes is incorporate all the best bits I like of different styles of music and try and put them into one.

TID: Some of the sounds you get are pretty unusual! What equipment do you like using to achieve those industrial noises?

Richard: My main bit of equipment I use is the Nord series especially the Nord Lead 3 performance synthesizer. I play around with it all day and come up with new crunchy sounds all the time it's an amazing bit of equipment.

TID: We've noticed a lot of minimal style techniques in your recent tracks, is that a sound you are getting more into now?

Richard: Not really I just thought I'd try it out for while, I've only done 2 tracks in that style but it's not for me really. There's quite a lot of minimal out there that has no groove and is just 8/12 mins of just noises and bleeps which i think can get a bit boring, so I thought I'd try and spice it up a little.

TID: The DJing is really hitting the heights for you at the moment, which gigs are you really looking forward to in the near future?

Richard: Well I've been really lucky at the moment because I just joined Ministry Of Sound as there new resident and that was like a dream come true so I think that's going to bring in some seriously cool gigs both in the U.K. and abroad. Talking of abroad i have an Australia Tour coming up in June which I can't wait for because I've always wanted to go there.

TID: So far your main activities have been in producing and DJing, have you ever wanted to get into the business side of things; set up your own label, run club nights etc?

Richard: No not really because I don't really have the passion to want to do something like that. I take my hat off to all the people who run a night or run there own label because it is a lot of hard work and dedication. I don't think I could put much time into doing something like that because I would want to put all my energy into producing and djing.

TID: Your next release is a real huge record: 'She Wants Me' on Spin Out, what was the inspiration for that track?

Richard: I love sampling old 70's and 80's records even classical and really going to town in chopping the bits up so I wanted to do something like that but also have a nice electro hook in there to push it that bit extra. I'm not blowing my own trumpet but it sounds so fat on a loud rig I don't know where it comes from he-he! I really didn't expect it to pump out as much as it does.

TID: Why did you choose to release on Spin Out?

Richard: I had done a remix for them before and really liked what the label was about and thought my sound fitted in perfectly. They really get behind there releases and are good to work with, I can actually see them being the next Global Underground of this scene in the future.

TID: It's got a pretty big remix package on there from Meat Katie and Si McEvoy too and been getting some massive DJ support. It must be a good feeling when a track really kicks off like that?

Richard: It's the best feeling ever, that's why I’m doing this job because I get such a buzz out of making tunes and then hearing that people like them.

TID: So who are you into music-wise at the moment? Any tips for the future?

Richard: I'm really into this guy called Boris Brejcha, his production is so tight and tracks are amazing, real dirty techno lovely jubbly. Also I think we are going to see big things from Phil Kieran.

TID: And what about you? What's coming up for you in the next few months?

Richard: I've just been flat out the past 3 months in the studio getting everything ready for the WMC and releases for after that. I've just finished the new Michael Gray track "Somewhere beyond", Dub Pistol's "Rapture", Luciana "Say what you wanna say" and a few others on Nervous Records, OM and Toolroom. As for my own projects I'm just finishing off the follow up to "pulling me under" which is due out on Toolroom Records with Abigail Bailey on the vocals.
