The Breakfastaz: "We Met Hanging Round The Streets of Ealing Generally Acting Cool!"

The Breakfastaz are a three man act. How did you guys meet and what made you decide to work together?

We met hanging round the streets of Ealing whilst wearing hoodies and caps and generally acting cool. We decided to work together to pool our resources; both creatively and literally.

What was your first release together and how did it go down?

Our first release went under the name breakfast beats and through it we got our record deal with Cyberfunk so it must have been alright.

What kind of production set up do you have? Do you all handle different aspects of a production?

We’re mainly computer based and have a number of mac’s filled with software synths and samples. We do all aspects of our productions from start to finish.

In 2005 you won the Best Breakthrough Act award at Breakspoll. How did that feel and were you expecting to win?

It was great. We never expected to win in our wildest dreams (apart from Froe but he’s cocky).

Do you all work on solo projects?

Yes and no. We often write music separately but it always goes under one banner. We all have different tastes and influences so it’s good sometimes not to write material altogether.

You’ve had releases on all the major breaks labels from Against the Grain to Passenger and have now made the move into launching your own label – The Breakfast Club. What inspired you to launch your own label?

A number of reasons but mainly because we wanted the freedom to release our records on our time to and not have to work around other artists on a label. Also, it means all the artwork, press, promotion etc. is entirely in our hands and at our discretion.

What do you have planned for the label in the future?

Several more Breakfastaz singles with some banging remixes (hopefully!) and then perhaps an album.

Do you all have equal handling of the business side of things or do you all manage different areas of the Breakfastaz empire?

We’re all equal partners but both in the studio and the office people naturally adopt different roles. For example, Froe does the hovering and Merf cleans the toilets.

You’ve remixed dozens of tracks in your time. Which has been your most memorable to work on?

They’ve all been great but ‘Warrior Charge’ by the Freestylers flowed really quickly and came out good too.

You have Australian and North American tours lined up for 2007. What reactions are you getting around the globe? Where would you recommend breaks fans to visit for a breaks-style holiday?

Both North America & Australia can be awesome but we’ve also had some great sets in Eastern Europe (most notably Russia & Georgia).

Eddy Temple-Morris once said of you guys “The future of UK dance music is safe if the hands of these 3 West London boys!” Do you feel a degree of pressure hearing statements like this?

Statements like that are encouraging and flattering but you just have to get on with things and let them take their course. We try to worry more about our music then what people have to say about us.

You guys have a successful DJing and production career and now your own label. What is next from the Breakfastaz?

More tracks, more touring and more fun.
