Artist:   8BitFelon

Welcome to the 8bitfelon…. New York: The early years… The 8BitFelon didn’t start as the 8BitFelon. He started experimenting with sounds at the age of 9 when his mother bought him a reel-to-reel tape recorder at a garage sale. Being enthralled with this device he started playing around with it, quickly recording himself onto tape for later playback. He would then invite his friends over so he could record them. He then started experimenting with the reel-to-reel recorder by “playing with the reels”, slowing them down, speeding them up and so forth. He eventually figured out how to disable the motor and let the reels become “motor less” so that they can be controlled by his hands. This would produce all sorts of different sounds, kind of what we would get now if we “scratched” a needle on a turntable by spinning the record fast or slow. About a year later in about 1979 he started playing with the family’s belt drive record player. First he put his hand on the record to slow it down to a stop while the motor and belt kept spinning (or at least tried). This produced some interesting sound effects that he likened to. Eventually he took off the rubber mat to find a motor and a belt, And quickly disengaged the belt so the platter could rotate freely. This kept him busy for hours experimenting and scratching on his mothers Frank Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr. records. Around this time he also learned the saxophone in wish he took up in grade school. California: The mid-current years Later on he began experimenting with sounds on computers, such as the early Commodore VIC 20 and Commodore 64, Atari 400, and 800…He would play little 8-bit “riffs” while he would record his audio onto his Betamax (Then eventually Beta-Hifi, then onto VHS Hifi) while mixing the computer sounds with other records such as RUN-DMC and the Beastie Boys (some of his influences growing up). He would come up with some really strange and interesting stuff. He would always experiment with different sounds, recording different sounds, and so on. The 8bit felon eventually went on into more commercial realms (in the mid 90’s) like making instrumental electronic tracks for Strictly Rhythm records in NY. His music has been played on various radio stations, clubs and events worldwide. His music has even aired on the Disney channel. Just recently the 8BitFelon has been focused on producing his own independent dance music. How did the name 8BitFelon come about? His name came to him while experimenting with 8-Bit sounds. One day while experimenting with certain lo-fi sounds in one of his songs he realized how much he (and other electronic artists) USE and ABUSE 8-bit and other lo-fi sounds within their compositions. So much infact that we have become the sound felons, or how as he likes to call himself: the “8BitFelon” If you have any questions or comments please feel free to email the 8Bitfelon: 8bitfelon@comcast.net
